The Kindle Ebook Reader Now Available In Target Stores

Kindle Handheld ebook reader and Nook Portable Ebook Readers In Retail Stores

Two separate reports from Engadget report that Target will begin promoting the Amazon Kindle on April 25 and Best Buy will start selling the Barnes & Noble Nook on April 18.

The blog posted a screen shot of a Target stock listing, which revealed the Amazon Kindle for $259. Engadget also got its hands on a picture of a similar shot from Best Buy's inventory, which listed the Nook.

I work at a Target Store in Alabama, and we haven't set about marketing the Kindle Portable Ebook Reader as of June 9th, inspite of a report announcing we would start featuring and promoting it on June 6. I came across another write-up showing the Kindle will be promoted in Target's sale paper in Sunday, June 7, for sale ads. I do know our early stock has arrived. I found it funny is that not one in 10 of our employees has any idea just what an ebook reader is or really does. Target test marketed the Kindle and news stories say the Kindle was flying from the shelf. Previous to this time, the Kinle ebook reader could only be purchased from Amazon or on Ebay (Unofficially, gray market and for inflated prices.) Amazon was marketing a plan whereby they'd give potential customers with the names and telephone numbers of willing Kindle owners living close to them where they may see it and have a small amount of hands-on time. Getting the device out somewhere it is seen and played with is likely to increase the sales and provide more competition to others in the market. Kindle continues to be the favourite portable ebook reader since it was initially released.

A spokeswoman for Barnes & Noble said, "We've not provided any bulletins," while Best Buy said, "As a matter of media policy, we aren't able to comment on rumor or conjecture." Target also said it "does not have anything to share at this point and isn't going to comment on rumors or speculation." Amazon failed to immediately reply to a request for comment.

Target is promoting the Sony Reader Digital Book PRS-505 at its stores since Sept. 14, 2008, and also Reader accessories like eBook Store prepaid cards, lighted covers, USB cables, AC chargers, and cases for those cables and chargers.

The Nook happens to be on the market on the net along with Barnes & Noble bookstores. The Kindle can be acquired straight from Amazon.com, but they have not been available in brick-and-mortar stores. The Apple iPad, which has e-book functionality, might be ordered online, at Apple retail stores, and at Best Buy.
