How do I charge a new TAX?
You may create and charge for as many taxes as you need to in order to comply with the law as it applies in your locale. The osCommerce tax system depends upon 5 things. Basic geographical Country definitions which define countries and states geographically, Zone definitions which define relationships between political areas, Tax Zone definitions which define the area legally affected by a tax, Tax CLASS definitions which define classes of goods which may be taxed in different ways, and Tax RATES which define the tax itself.
To charge a new tax, you must assure that all 5 of these factors are addressed. The tools needed to configure the tax system are found in Admin / Locations and Taxes.
How do I configure a tax zone?
The tax zone setup in osCommerce (and it's CRE Loaded Edition) is versatile and more useful than it would appear at first glance.
The term Tax Zone is in fact, a misnomer. Looking at the title of this tool could lead you to believe that you are simply selecting a zone in which to apply a tax, which is not the case. This is a precursor of other terminology ills which afflict this otherwise elegant feature so pay close attention to the following details.
Tax Zones are USER DEFINED. You may define a new tax zone (as many as you wish!) by selecting the Tax Zone option under the Admin tool's Locations / Taxes menu. The Insert button is used to Insert a new zone. Pressing it presents an editing area on the right of the screen which asks you to enter a zone name and description. Doing so is simple enough - fill in your choices and press the insert button, which will promptly present your first opportunity to go wrong.
On inserting the new zone you will be presented with a zone list entry that features the name of your zone and an infomation / control area to the right of it which contains some current information for the selected zone. It will contain the information you entered and a line that tells you the number of zones, which at this point should be zero (0). Now, this seems contradictory because obviously you are looking at at least ONE zone in the list, having just created one. This should be a clue!
Having created a zone, you must now DEFINE the zone. This is done by selecting the zone you wish to define and pressing the details button. You will then be presented with an empty screen with a header line with 3 headers, country, zone and action, with buttons below the action heading labeled back, and insert. Don't zone out on me, just press the insert button now.
This takes you to a screen that tells you it is now displaying 0 of 0 countries with an action area on the right of the screen that is titled New Sub Zone and contains two drop down menus labeled country and zone. At the bottom are two buttons labeled Cancel and Insert. The country box contains a list of countries, and at this point the zone box says Type Below and contains no other options.
Use the country box to select the country in which your sub zone is located. The zone dropdown will now contain a list of regions within the selected country and the default value of All Zones. Select the zone you wish to include and press the Insert button. Congratulations, this User Defined zone will now allow you to charge taxes in one region of one country. To add other regions to this zone (as for VAT charged throughout the EU), simply add another country entry (they need not be unique) and add the desired subzone as before. Thats it!
As you can see, you may create very versatile zoning structures that will allow you to handle just about any zoning related task. These zones can be used for shipping, and for payment in some modules depending on the features supported by the module author.

(IE : The cart does not force you to describe a $25 Gift Voucher as a $25 Voucher - you can describe it as a $50 voucher if you want - though the cart will not give the client credit for more than the price of the voucher). It is sound practice to keep the description in line with the price of the Voucher, and with the model number as well - I suggest GIFT25 for a $25 Gift Voucher , GIFT50 for a $50 Gift Voucher, etc. Configure Gift Vouchers via the Admin's Coupon / Gift Voucher too.

Tax Classes are created using Admin / Locations and Taxes / Tax Class
On clicking the link for this tool you are presented with a list of Tax Classes in a display that looks much like the standard catalog display. Each line contains a Tax Classes name and the currently selected tax class will have a control panel on the Right allowing you to Edit or Delete the class. The control panel will also contain a brief discription the types of goods which would belong to the class.
Beneath the list of existing tax classes is a button which will allow you to create a new tax class. When you press the button you are presented with a new panel at the right of the screen which will allow you to enter the name of the class and a description of what type goods should belong to this class.
The actual Tax Class code does nothing more or less than label a product to allow other parts of the cart to apply Tax Rates bases on these definitions. If no tax rate is defined for a particular Tax Class it will not be taxed.

You may create a new tax rate by using the tool at Admin / Locations and Taxes / Tax Rate.
This menu appears like the category menu - with one line for each tax rate defined. How do I configure a tax zone?
The tax zone setup in osCommerce (and it's CRE Loaded Edition) is versatile and more useful than it would appear at first glance.
The term Tax Zone is in fact, a misnomer. Looking at the title of this tool could lead you to believe that you are simply selecting a zone in which to apply a tax, which is not the case. This is a precursor of other terminology ills which afflict this otherwise elegant feature so pay close attention to the following details.
Tax Zones are USER DEFINED. You may define a new tax zone (as many as you wish!) by selecting the Tax Zone option under the Admin tool's Locations / Taxes menu. The Insert button is used to Insert a new zone. Pressing it presents an editing area on the right of the screen which asks you to enter a zone name and description. Doing so is simple enough - fill in your choices and press the insert button, which will promptly present your first opportunity to go wrong.
On inserting the new zone you will be presented with a zone list entry that features the name of your zone and an infomation / control area to the right of it which contains some current information for the selected zone. It will contain the information you entered and a line that tells you the number of zones, which at this point should be zero (0). Now, this seems contradictory because obviously you are looking at at least ONE zone in the list, having just created one. This should be a clue!
Having created a zone, you must now DEFINE the zone. This is done by selecting the zone you wish to define and pressing the details button. You will then be presented with an empty screen with a header line with 3 headers, country, zone and action, with buttons below the action heading labeled back, and insert. Don't zone out on me, just press the insert button now.
This takes you to a screen that tells you it is now displaying 0 of 0 countries with an action area on the right of the screen that is titled New Sub Zone and contains two drop down menus labeled country and zone. At the bottom are two buttons labeled Cancel and Insert. The country box contains a list of countries, and at this point the zone box says Type Below and contains no other options.
Use the country box to select the country in which your sub zone is located. The zone dropdown will now contain a list of regions within the selected country and the default value of All Zones. Select the zone you wish to include and press the Insert button. Congratulations, this User Defined zone will now allow you to charge taxes in one region of one country. To add other regions to this zone (as for VAT charged throughout the EU), simply add another country entry (they need not be unique) and add the desired subzone as before. Thats it!
As you can see, you may create very versatile zoning structures that will allow you to handle just about any zoning related task. These zones can be used for shipping, and for payment in some modules depending on the features supported by the module author.
How do I configure Gift Voucher handling in the cart?
Gift Voucher handling is done via Modules / Order Total using the Gift Voucher module. As with any other module clicking the install button installed the module into the cart, following which you may click the Edit button to configure the settings.
Gift Voucher and coupon handling is also affected by choices made during coupon creation and by tax module settings.

Before starting to sell products it is necessary to configure shipping. This is done in two places. Admin / Configuration / Default Shipping Settings and Modules / Shipping.

Creating a Gift Voucher is as simple as creating a product with a model number that begins with GIFT. Ideally this should be all uppercase. The price of the product is the value of the Gift Voucher - though this need not necessarily be so. (IE : The cart does not force you to describe a $25 Gift Voucher as a $25 Voucher - you can describe it as a $50 voucher if you want - though the cart will not give the client credit for more than the price of the voucher). It is sound practice to keep the description in line with the price of the Voucher, and with the model number as well - I suggest GIFT25 for a $25 Gift Voucher , GIFT50 for a $50 Gift Voucher, etc. Configure Gift Vouchers via the Admin's Coupon / Gift Voucher too.

On clicking the link for this tool you are presented with a list of Tax Classes in a display that looks much like the standard catalog display. Beneath the list of existing tax classes is a button which will allow you to create a new tax class. The actual Tax Class code does nothing more or less than label a product to allow other parts of the cart to apply Tax Rates bases on these definitions. If no tax rate is defined for a particular Tax Class it will not be taxed.

SEO Questions - Why do I see different Google results than my clients?
Having been in this industry for as long as I have, I often forget some of the basics. Well, it's not that I
forget, it's just that I assume that everyone else in the industry has the same knowledge level as I do.
So when I get a "newbie" asking a question like "Why are my Google results different than my clients" I have to
take a step back and realize that we aren't all equal.
Therefore in this article I'm going to answer this one seemingly simple question. While it may be simple to
those of us "in the know" this isn't always the case with others.
One of the scariest things you can do as a new SEO is talk to a client. That's because you are always worried
that they are going to ask you a question that's over your head. And while you can fake your way through some
questions when you are new, there are some that just stump you.
Of course even the greenest of most SEO's usually know more then their clients so you don't often have to fake
an answer. Of course I would never advocate faking it. When I don't know, I've found the best thing you can
say is "I don't know, let me find out and I'll get back to you."
And that's just what happened the other day. A new person came to me and said "I had a client who saw different
Google results than I did, and I didn't know what to tell them."
So let me give you the answer I gave him.
Google, like all the other engines, is comprised of literally tens of thousands of servers. Each server is part
of a larger cluster of computers. Each cluster forms part of a datacenter. Each datacenter then acts as an
independent branch of Google.
These datacenters are found all over the US. For the longest time Google only had about 13 data centers that
served all the results to the world. Now the number is estimated at around 80.
While some of these data centers are used for pre-testing results (for example, testing a new algorithm out
before moving it to the main data centers) most are used just to deal with the load that Google receives every
day.
These data centers are dispersed throughout the US in geographically specific areas. They have done this so
that queries are served to the data center nearest to the user.
For example, while there are a large number of data centers on the eastern coast, a person searching from San
Francisco will likely be served their search results from a data center near them, such as an Oregon or
California data center.
It is because of the differences in these data centers that someone searching in New York will see different
results than someone in Los Angeles.
It is reasonable to think that each data center acts somewhat independently of the others. That means that their
update schedules are different as are their crawling schedules. One can even assume that the algorithm changes
which affect the index happen at different times as well.
This accounts for why there are differences in search results. Because of Google's perpetually updating index,
the results you see near you may be similar to results in other data centers but ultimately different.
This could be due to how the crawlers retrieve sites - a crawler may find a site closer to it more easily and
therefore add it to the index sooner than a geographically far away crawler would find the same site.
For example, a site in Vancouver, Canada may appear in the California data center days before the eastern data
centers. Because this site would be added to the west data center sooner, it will have an impact on the search
results returned sooner.
Consider it like the ripples you see in the water when you drop a rock into a pond. If you drop just one rock,
you see the ripples move out from where you dropped it. However, if you drop 2 rocks close to each other and at
slightly different times you see how the ripples interact with each other when they meet.
The index changes reflect this type of interaction. One site can have a subtle but noticeable effect on the
index. Yet the effects aren't noticed across all data centers at the same time. We can also see the changes in
the index grow over time, so that one Vancouver site's effect grows over time, but the effect is different
across the data centers because changes happening with other sites also has an impact.
As you can see, this is why you will see different results across the data centers. It's not necessarily

See Yourself As Others See You. See Others As They See Themselves
Let's talk about an altogether too common way in which both men and women completely hamstring themselves when it comes to gaining confidence and meeting members of the opposite sex. Today's angle is a particularly interesting one for two reasons. First, and as is often the case, I've never heard or seen it discussed anywhere else?at all. Second, and importantly, the concept is truly and undeniably useful for both men and women.
As the title has already telegraphed, what we're talking about here is training yourself how to see yourself as others see you?and then how to see others as they see themselves.
So what does that mean?
You as a human being are in a remarkable position. Have you ever considered how wild it truly is that out of six billion plus human beings just like you on this planet, you will only ever see light through the eyes of ONE of them? You are confined to your own physical being, at least as far as the laws of physics apply in this life. The metaphysics of all this are, of course, a subject better suited to some other article that is not about dating and relationships. Fair enough.
But since we ARE focused like a laser on your total, utter and massive success in the dating world-up to and including complete control over your dating life-you'd best believe that there is tremendous value in exploring this concept more deeply from a certain perspective.
So many of us artificially limit ourselves from believing that we can possibly deserve the kind of partner we want. Going way beyond "approach anxiety"?going way beyond "getting beat by a girl" and indeed way beyond anything you've ever heard from me until now, it can be safely assumed that much of the problem is directly attributable to how you see yourself vs. how you see others.
Here's what I mean.
Since you know every intimate detail of your own thoughts, fears and weaknesses-as well as your strengths, of course-you know all of your own darkest secrets. Every imperfection, every prurient thought, every doubt and indeed-every single blasted thing that would cause you humiliating embarrassment if others knew.
Armed with this knowledge, what do you do? You go out and become completely disarmed by a "beautiful" and apparently "perfect" creature of the opposite gender. In your mind, he or she is flawless.
Then comes the vortex of self-doubt. "Oh man?I could never be in HER league. She's a veritable vision of perfection?and I can't even get into an elevator without feeling claustrophobic, come from a foreign country, need a haircut, have a big nose, have spring allergies, say stupid things when nervous, chew my toenails in private and once cheated on a math test."
So once again you talk yourself out of being successful.
Erstwhile, your "vision of perfection" is inside her own state of being thinking, "Girl?get yourself TOGETHER! Your panty lines are showing, you have stupid looking ears, are habitually late for work, snort when you laugh, have two crooked teeth and wear contact lenses. NO WONDER you've been DATELESS for a MONTH now!"
Crazy stuff, isn't it? If only we could see inside each other's heads. Better yet, if only we could read the thoughts of others regarding US.
Well, you can't do that, but here are two simple exercises you CAN do:
1) Eliminate private knowledge as a "limiting factor" and take notes regarding how others respond to you
First and foremost, realize that your private thoughts are NOT public. Nobody else can evaluate you by them, so STOP using them against yourself. They do not exist in the minds of others because they CANNOT. Next, consider the comments you receive from people. Where you hear patterns repeated time and again it's time to believe what you are hearing. If pointing to ways you can better yourself, DO SO and deserve what you want. If you hear recurring positive comments and/or see recurring positive reactions to your presence and/or interactions, begin to recognize the truly positive manner in which others perceive you. This sounds so simplistic, yet how many of us go home and obsess over self-perceived "negatives" that we are repeatedly told are POSITIVES? If you think I must be kidding, actively begin to look for clues in your social life where you have previously been oblivious. Note the PATTERNS that you detect, and trust them.
2) Pretend you are walking in the shoes of someone you find attractive
Okay, here's the "power ball". Ready? My guess is that when you encounter someone who really motors your sexual attraction levels, that person is actually more "perfectly imperfect" than "perfect". The next time you are practically paralyzed by attraction towards someone, I want you pretend for a moment that you were THAT PERSON instead of yourself. In your darkest, most self-critical thoughts, what would you be most self-conscious about? Go ahead and in your blind attraction make an effort to approach that concept with sober judgment. You will likely identify an entire litany of faults and potential attitudes that would make him or her VERY insecure, at least theoretically. Ironically, you may find yourself recognizing traits and/or features that some people may be self-critical about but which are at the same time EXACTLY what is making you so hot for this person. It's strange for sure. But it is an EYE OPENER.
What we're really exposing here is a dark corner of human ARROGANCE. We somehow believe that our own self-pronounced judgments both AGAINST ourselves and FOR others somehow carry greater weight than everyone else's, don't we? That's exactly what ends up limiting us, yet really yours or mine is only one of over six billion different perspectives-be it towards ourselves or others. For once, give yourself the gift of seeing things from the point of view of other people. Do so and enjoy the shock when you finally do meet someone who knocks you out?and you realize very quickly as you get to know him or her that many of the insecurities you saw from their potential perspective are actually ACTIVELY present in theirs. And feel the power and joy of being able to share with that person what others-namely YOU-see instead. How cool is that?
Typically, my recurring mantra is "deserve what you want" around here. Today you get a breather. Today I've let you in on a secret: You may already deserve WAY, WAY more than you have been giving yourself credit for.

1) Eliminate private knowledge as a "limiting factor" and take notes regarding how others respond to you
First and foremost, realize that your private thoughts are NOT public. Nobody else can evaluate you by them, so STOP using them against yourself. They do not exist in the minds of others because they CANNOT. Next, consider the comments you receive from people. Where you hear patterns repeated time and again it's time to believe what you are hearing. If pointing to ways you can better yourself, DO SO and deserve what you want. If you hear recurring positive comments and/or see recurring positive reactions to your presence and/or interactions, begin to recognize the truly positive manner in which others perceive you. This sounds so simplistic, yet how many of us go home and obsess over self-perceived "negatives" that we are repeatedly told are POSITIVES? If you think I must be kidding, actively begin to look for clues in your social life where you have previously been oblivious. Note the PATTERNS that you detect, and trust them.
2) Pretend you are walking in the shoes of someone you find attractive
Okay, here's the "power ball". Ready? My guess is that when you encounter someone who really motors your sexual attraction levels, that person is actually more "perfectly imperfect" than "perfect". The next time you are practically paralyzed by attraction towards someone, I want you pretend for a moment that you were THAT PERSON instead of yourself. In your darkest, most self-critical thoughts, what would you be most self-conscious about? Go ahead and in your blind attraction make an effort to approach that concept with sober judgment. You will likely identify an entire litany of faults and potential attitudes that would make him or her VERY insecure, at least theoretically. Ironically, you may find yourself recognizing traits and/or features that some people may be self-critical about but which are at the same time EXACTLY what is making you so hot for this person. It's strange for sure. But it is an EYE OPENER.
What we're really exposing here is a dark corner of human ARROGANCE. We somehow believe that our own self-pronounced judgments both AGAINST ourselves and FOR others somehow carry greater weight than everyone else's, don't we? That's exactly what ends up limiting us, yet really yours or mine is only one of over six billion different perspectives-be it towards ourselves or others. For once, give yourself the gift of seeing things from the point of view of other people. Do so and enjoy the shock when you finally do meet someone who knocks you out?and you realize very quickly as you get to know him or her that many of the insecurities you saw from their potential perspective are actually ACTIVELY present in theirs. And feel the power and joy of being able to share with that person what others-namely YOU-see instead. How cool is that?
Typically, my recurring mantra is "deserve what you want" around here. Today you get a breather. Today I've let you in on a secret: You may already deserve WAY, WAY more than you have been giving yourself credit for.
